You refer to “vellum” as “translucent” paper. Why?

The term “vellum” describes a very “smooth” paper finish and references many different types of papers, including opaque varieties. More accurately, the term “translucent” refers to the fact that light is able to pass through the paper to some degree. Typically, translucent papers have a smooth, vellum finish.
