I don't have a picture to post, at least not one I took myself. All that happened to me was LOTS of rain. But my town, and the major city we live near, was devastated this weekend. It felt like Katrina happened here. I'm sure there were quite a few people who moved from New Orleans to Nashville after Hurricane Katrina, thinking "Oh, Nashville is safe. Nothing but a few tornadoes here and there." And then this. If you haven't seen it on the news, I'd be surprised. It's so widespread. Towns all over middle Tennessee took about 12-15" of rain from Friday to Sunday night. Several of our malls look like marinas, as well as our famous Opryland Hotel and the Grand Ole Opry, which took on 8-10 FEET of water. Waters receded from many places today, only to drain back into the Cumberland River, which then proceeded to overflow onto our main tourist street downtown, "2nd Avenue". Our new Schermerhorn Symphony Center took on 15 feet of water today in just a few hours in its basement. Our well-known Vanderbilt Children's Hospital had to close its emergency bay and lobby, which flooded and cracked the flooring.
It will take months to clean and rebuild, or years, if we use Katrina as an example. Our biggest tourism season is about to start, and all the hotels are full of people who already live here and are without housing, as whole neighborhoods are under water. The Cumberland River went 11 feet over its previous (1937) highest flood level. Thankfully the death toll has been minimal, but I think the aftereffects are going to be terrible for our economy, which was just starting to pick up again. Please pray for us.
I didn't take many pictures, as my house is built on a hill and our whole neighborhood is on a high level, but many people were affected severely, losing homes, cars and all their possesssions, sometimes even pets. I will definitely scrap this at some point, but I don't know that my kids will remember much but being stuck home during 2 days of solid rain.
I just needed to write this down somewhere. Thanks.
